What you need to know before you intern or volunteer in Halle, Germany: The Excellence Center in Europe, located in the city of Halle (Salle), is an excellent choice for volunteering and interning in Germany. The Center offers various volunteer and internship programs for those who are eager to come to Germany and educationally support through teaching refugees and local Germans. The Excellence Center in Europe is an extension of the Excellence Center in Palestine which was established in 2011. The Excellence Center has eight years of experience working with children, adults, and community members in Hebron and Halle.

What is the duration of intern and volunteer programs in Germany?

The Excellence Center is flexible in scheduling. You choose when you would like to start and end your volunteer or internship work. As the Center works year round, it means that you choose the time of year for your program. A volunteer period can run as little as three days, or it can run as long as three months at a maximum.  Internship in Germany programs may run from one month up to three months maximum.

Internship and volunteer duties

As an intern or volunteer in Germany you will work directly with refugees in Halle (Salle) teaching them conversational English. Many of these refugees originate from Syria and Iraq, besides other war-torn countries.  You will have the choice to receive Arabic or German language instruction.  The Center maintains qualified teachers who will instruct you. If you are taking Arabic language instruction, you will learn and improve it faster because you will be surrounded by many of  Arabic-speaking refugees.

Internship and volunteer benefits

In addition to sharing your knowledge and talents with others, you will have the opportunity to acquaint yourself with the culture of both Germans and Arabs. You will reside with a local host family for the duration of your program. This immersion is a unique opportunity to experience German culture, customs, and daily life in Halle.  The Excellence Center will provide you with sightseeing within the city of Halle.

Do I need to speak Arabic or German to intern or volunteer in the programs?

No, to become an intern or volunteer program participant at the Excellence Center you do not need to have any prior knowledge of Arabic or German. You are required, however, to have English proficiency and fluency in order to be able to teach English to students, as well as communicate with the Center staff who are all fluent in English.
