What is the importance of the Arabic language? Why learning it may be expedient.
Arabic is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. It is spoken by more than 467 million people. Its speakers are distributed throughout the Arab world, as well as many other neighboring regions such as Ahwaz, Turkey, Chad, Mali, Senegal, Eritrea, and Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Iran. As Arabic is the language of the Qur’an, the language of prayer, it is very important to Muslims.
The Arabic language has had a direct and indirect impact on many other languages in the Islamic world, such as Turkish, Persian, Amazigh, Kurdish, Urdu, Malaysian, Indonesian, Albanian, and Hungarian, as well as African languages such as Hausa, and Swahili.
Arabic is an official language in all the countries of the Arab world, in addition to being an official language in Chad, Eritrea, and Israel. It is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. The International Day of Arabic is celebrated on December 18th as the anniversary of the adoption of Arabic among the working languages of the United Nations.
Why study Arabic in Germany?
In the last five years Germany has begun hosting large numbers of refugees who flee from their homelands, especially from Syria due to the ongoing war there. Syria just happens to be known as the origin of the Arabic alphabet.
The large population of Syrian refugees in Germany contributes to the creation of an atmosphere that is suitable not only for studying the Arabic language, but also for practicing it with the Syrian refugees who reside in Germany. Such large numbers of Syrian refugees has contributed to the creation of an Arab environment which parallels the Arab societies of the Middle East.
This has led German authorities to introduce the Arabic language in some guidebooks and guide signs in many places in Germany. In addition, Germans desire to learn the Arabic language and benefit from the linguistic heritage of the Syrians has increased.
