Study Spoken or Modern-Standard Arabic: There’s no doubt that Arabic has become one of the most important languages in the world. It’s one of the six recognized languages by the United Nations and is spoken by 400 million people globally.

Due to tensions, wars and conflicts in the Middle East, many jobs now require knowledge of the Arabic language. Students may also want to learn Arabic as they study it at college or university. There are two types of Arabic: Spoken Arabic known as “Amiya” or Modern-Standard Arabic.

What is the difference between Spoken and Modern-Standard Arabic and what should I start with?

People might wonder what the difference is between Spoken Arabic and Modern-Standard Arabic, especially those who haven’t studied Arabic before. This is the simple answer:

  • Spoken Arabic known as “Amiya” is the dialect that people in the 22 Arabic countries use. It’s the spoken language used on a daily basis in conversation.

For example, the Levantine dialect is spoken by people from Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria. “Amiya” is also used by people from the Arab Gulf states, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, the Emirates, and others. Arab countries in North Africa, including Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco also use this dialect. The Egyptian dialect is uniquely different from other dialects, and has no direct similarity to “Amiya” other than some vocabulary and grammatical structures.

  • The Modern-Standard Arabic is mostly used in the press, in public speaking and in all formal situations. This language used conversationally or when you meet someone, only in formal settings.

So, which one should I start with: Spoken Arabic or Modern-Standard Arabic?

This simply depends on which one would be beneficial for you. You can even study both at the same time if you wish.

If you’re only interested in speaking Arabic and communicating well in conversation, you only need to learn Spoken Arabic. But if you also want to be able to read, write and speak formally, then you should stat with Modern-Standard Arabic and progress on to Spoken Arabic or both at the same time.

Where to Study Spoken or Modern-Standard Arabic?

Many people around the world learn Arabic as part of their university studies, including undergraduate majors such as Islamic studies, Middle Eastern studies, social sciences, religious studies and journalism. It is important for these students to improve their language level during university to obtain a distinguished job opportunity after graduation.

Although these students study the Arabic language under the supervision of teachers specialized in the Arabic language, they need experience speaking and practicing the language in an Arab country. Therefore, many people travel and participate in Arabic language courses in different Arab countries. Perhaps one of the most prominent destinations for studying the language is Lebanon, Palestine and Egypt.

There is no doubt that learning Arabic language in an Arab country is a great advantage. However, due to the political conditions of some Arab countries and specifically the negative effects of the Arab Spring, which greatly affected the stability and security of these countries, many look for alternative options in nearby and safer countries.

Germany is one of the educational destinations for learning. Germany has:

  • a large number of Arabs and Arabic speakers.
  • Half a million Syrian refugees who fled the civil war that has been going on for years.
  • safe and cheap travel and tourism infrastructure.
  • a rich history, including the First and Second World War.
