Why is Germany a good  locale for studying Arabic?

Since Germany is neither an Arabic speaking country, nor is it an Arab country, what makes Germany a good place for studying Arabic?

  1.  Arabs are found in Germany after World War II

After the Second World War innumerable Arab citizens came to participate in the reconstruction of Germany because Germany needed a labor force that would fill the severe shortages of labor that resulted from the war. At that time German employers made ongoing efforts to bring in large numbers of laborers from third world countries, including Arabs and Muslims.  A key factor that acted as a positive force and influence in the decision of many Arabs to emigrate to Germany was the absence of a colonial history by Germany in the Arab world. The same cannot be said of England, France, and Italy.

  •   Most Arabic dialects are to be found in Germany

Today members of the Arab community living in Germany number about one million. This population hails primarily from Morocco, Tunisia, Palestine, Syria, Egypt, Lebanon, and Iraq. About 700,000 persons have German citizenship. Large numbers of them have university degrees. At the outset, the main goal of many of these Arab citizens was to work in Germany for a temporary period in order to improve their living conditions, afterwards returning to their homelands; this particularly was the plan for those who emigrated alone and left their families behind at home.

These migrations continued, and expanded to include large numbers of students from Arab and Islamic countries studying in a whole variety of academic disciplines. This means that in Germany you can learn any dialect you want, as well as practice that dialect with its native speakers.

  •  Learn about different Arab cultures in Germany

There are many Arab communities throughout Germany. The Palestinian community is one of the largest Arab communities in all of Germany. Palestinians, many of them from the Occupied Territories, emigrated to Germany in the late 1950s and early 1960s to study in universities. Most live in large cities, such as Berlin.

Native Lebanese residents of Germany do not have an established population number because Palestinians, Kurds, and others are included under the Lebanese category; however, the number may be close to 50,000 Lebanese natives.

In addition to the Palestinian and Lebanese communities, there are Moroccan, Tunisian, Egyptian, Sudanese, Syrian, Somali, and Iraqi communities living in Germany. This means that you can experience more than one Arab culture in one place at the same time, including participating in various cultural activities and social events of these communities.

  • The Syrians are the third largest foreign community in Germany

As reported by German media, the number of Syrians without German citizenship reached 699,000 in 2017, making it the third-largest foreign community in Germany after Turks and Poles. This means that you can learn Syrian Arabic from native speakers by engaging in the activities organized by the Center with the Syrian refugees. This will enable you to practice what you have learned from language study, thereby enhancing your language abilities within a shorter period of time.
