A tour of Halle

All volunteers of the Excellence Center can expect to receive a tour of the city. The highlight of the tour is the people it is shared with, as people are a priority for the Excellence Center in its ethos, work, and activities. Walking is a great opportunity to get to know someone while the eyes wander, to share opinions, ideas and stories. In fact, after the tour, strong mutual appreciation can be found.

Getting to know Halle

When moving to a new location, whether you come to Halle for a week or three months, it takes time to get to know the place. It is a guarantee that when you are later trying to find a specific place in Halle, at some point you will use the tour as a basis for how to direct yourself.

A tour is an excellent way to open your eyes to the different places and aspects you might want to explore in the city centre out of the myriad to choose from. This includes cultural, sports, musical, art, theatrical and social experiences among others.

A strong recommendation is to pick up leaflets from the different locations you visit so that you are up to date on when events of interest will take place. This might be the list of plays to be performed at the opera house that month. The lively events of Halle can also be found on posters bouncing off the city’s walls and at the tourist information center next to the oldest café in Halle.

Although the internet is informative with reviews and recommendations for where the best café is around the world, the lists and profligacy of this can be exhaustive. There’s something special about personal tips and information from a tour; advice sticks more in your brain and feels more cemented as it comes from someone’s mouth rather than their keyboard.

Highlights

Here is a little insight of what your tour of Halle could be like- without too many spoilers!

Highlights of Halle’s city tour include the Lutheran Church, the university buildings, the city’s graveyard and the government building. The mix of gothic and more modern architecture is exciting. Halle is rich in its history. When you are bustling about the streets trying to find the best place to buy a kebab, it is easy to negate this history, which is why the tour is so significant for bringing the stories of the streets and architecture to mind.

The quietness of the university halls is soberly thought-provoking and inspiring, in contrast with the liveliness which students bring to the city. Any graveyard is an insight into a city, its past people and their lives, and is also a flourishing, well-kept green space- recommended as a tour highlight by one volunteer at the Excellence Center.

Whether the tour is in sunshine or rain, it is fun and important for your stay in Halle.
