The Volunteer to Teach English and Study Arabic in Germany program provides you with the opportunity to volunteer with refugees, immigrants, and Germans in the city of Halle (Saale), Germany, while studying the Arabic language, and practicing it with native speakers from Syria, Sudan, and Palestine. While you volunteer you will also become familiar with the Arabic and German cultures as you live daily life in Halle.

Qualifications
This volunteer program “Teach English and Study Arabic in Germany” is open to applicants who would like to help community members in Halle improve their English speaking skills. Volunteers do not need a university teaching or English degree to apply or participate. Although any academic degree is certainly welcomed, a degree is not required.
An applicant is required:
- To be over the age of 18;
- Must have a good attitude and be eager and open to learn;
- Must be fluent in English – native and non-native English speakers are welcomed.
An applicant is NOT required to:
- Speak Arabic or German
- Be experienced in teaching English

Volunteers Study Arabic in Germany While Volunteering
Volunteers in Germany receive 3 hours of Arabic language courses per week with an Arabic teacher. The daily immersion will afford a volunteer with plenty of chances to meet people who will help you practice your Arabic skills. Volunteers are able to choose what kind of Arabic they would like to learn:
- Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)
- The Palestinian and Syrian dialects
- Shami or Levantine Arabic (Amiyya dialect)

What will I be Doing in the Volunteer to Teach English and Study Arabic in Germany?
- You will teach two or three conversational English classes each week, either in an individual or a small class of persons, who age anywhere from 7 to 70 years old. You will be provided teaching materials by the Center in order to teach creative lessons.
- You will arrange and organize English language activities and workshops that help our students practice the English language.
- You will give two presentations: One presentation will focus on the use of the EC teaching manual; the second presentation will focus on the customs and traditions of your native country.
- You will participate in weekly meetings with the Director of the Center.

When Can I Start and End my Volunteering Program in Germany?
The Excellence Center in Germany is looking for volunteers around the year. Applicants decide when they wish to start and end their volunteer experience, and the Excellence Center (EC) in Europe makes it happen. You have maximum flexibility in deciding your start and finish dates. You can volunteer from one to 12 weeks.
A Day in the Life of a Volunteer in Germany
The volunteer starts his/her day with a breakfast at the Center at 9:30 a.m. On designated weeks the volunteer may be required to prepare the breakfast. After breakfast, the volunteer meets his/her students for the first English class of the day. Morning classes last for two hours with a fifteen-minute break in the middle.
After the class, the volunteer takes a break for lunch, either to cook something at the Center or to go out to eat with the other interns and volunteers. In the afternoon you might teach another class or find yourself studying Arabic in class until the Center closes at 6 p.m. Volunteers in Germany are asked to assist in one cleaning duty per week.

What Does the Application Process Look Like?
- The participant emails the Excellence Center to receive an application.
- The participant fills out the application and sends it back to us.
- We review the application with our team.
- You may be invited to interview on a Skype call.
- If selected for the program, we will send you an acceptance letter and a contract.
- You sign the contract and send it back to us.
- You pay the fees.
- You are ready to come to Germany and join the program. Welcome.
Do I Need a Teaching English as Foreign Language (TEFL) Certificate?
No, having the TEFL certificate is not a requirement. You will be provided with a teaching manual and materials. This program is designed so that you gain experience in teaching English as a Foreign Language.
When Can I Apply and For How Long Can I volunteer?
This volunteer opportunity is open year-round. You can apply at any time throughout the year. YOU choose your start and end dates. The minimum period of participation is one week.
Traveling to Germany on Your Own?
You will easily meet many refugees, immigrants, German and other internationals, as well as community members, all with a variety of interests.
The Excellence Center in Europe hosts many international visitors from all over the world who will be studying, volunteering at other organizations, visiting, or volunteering at Center. You will, of course, be engaging with them in educational and community activities that the Center organizes.
Everyone at the Excellence Center in Europe in Halle (Saale) – students, international visitors, and staff – are one big family, and there are always activities to do together.
Visa to Germany
If you are coming from a European country that has signed the Schengen agreement, then you do not need a visa to enter Germany. For those who come from countries that are a part of this program, you are permitted to stay in Germany for up to three months.
All other travelers will need to apply for a Schengen visa to enter Germany. This visa will allow you to enter and stay in Germany for a maximum period of 3 months (90 days). It is important to note that this visa prohibits visa-holders from getting a job (even as a freelance) during their stay.
